The Haitian Versailles
The Palais Sans Souci is one of Haiti’s historic jewels, located in Milot, in the north of the country. Built in the early 19th century by King Henri Christophe, the palace served as Christophe’s royal residence and seat of government during the period of his Haitian monarchy. This architectural masterpiece was a symbol of Haiti’s post-independence power and prosperity, rivaling European palaces to the point of often being dubbed the “Versailles of the Caribbean”.
Unfortunately, the Palais Sans Souci was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1842, but its imposing ruins still bear witness to its former splendor. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s a must-see for those wishing to delve into Haitian history.
