    The Imperial Fortress of Haiti

The Citadelle Laferrière, nicknamed the ‘Gibraltar of the Americas’, is a masterpiece of military architecture located at the top of a mountain in the commune of Milot, in the north of Haiti. Built between 1805 and 1820 under the orders of King Henri Christophe, the Citadelle symbolises the determination of the Haitian people to protect their recently won independence. Designed to resist possible French attacks, this imposing stone fortress stands 900 metres above sea level, offering a breathtaking view of the mountains, forests and Atlantic Ocean in the distance.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, the Citadelle is a source of national pride and a symbol of freedom. With its thick walls and bastions with cannons still in place, it illustrates the resistance and ingenuity of the Haitian people, marked by centuries of history and struggle.
