Guardian of Haitian Independence
Located in the mountains of Kenscoff, not far from Port-au-Prince, Fort Jacques is a historic Haitian monument, built shortly after the proclamation of independence in 1804. This imposing military fort was erected by General Alexandre Pétion to defend the new nation from possible attacks by French forces attempting to regain control. Built at an altitude offering spectacular views over the Port-au-Prince valley and its surroundings, Fort Jacques has become a symbol of resilience and freedom.
Surrounded by pine forests, the fort still has its massive stone walls and period cannons. It is a peaceful place steeped in history, perfect for history buffs and nature lovers alike.
